Students Rally Their Community to Support The Sparkle Foundation’s Medical Outreach Programme

We are incredibly proud to partner with Haileybury, an independent school in Hertford, United Kingdom, whose students consistently demonstrate a strong commitment to service, leadership and global citizenship. Through initiatives such as the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, students have supported The Sparkle Foundation by organising creative fundraising events that make a tangible difference to the communities we serve in Malawi.

One such student is Eva Kinsey, who was part of the team that organised a community quiz night in support of our Medical Outreach Programme. Eva kindly wrote the reflection below, capturing the experience from a student's perspective. We are delighted to share her account of the evening and the impact that was made.

A truly ‘Sparkle-ing’ evening!

In the build-up to this event, it sometimes felt as if the night might never arrive. Through numerous breaks, lunchtimes, club periods and weekends, our team worked together to organise what we hoped would be a fantastic evening.

We divided the responsibilities evenly, with each of us compiling and presenting a quiz round, sourcing sponsorship, or designing our presentation. To secure a venue and prizes, we reached out to local businesses both online and in person. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Sprachcaffe, we not only found a fantastic venue to host the event but were also able to provide a complimentary buffet for our guests.

Although we initially anticipated around 80 attendees, a last-minute surge brought an additional 20 participants, leaving us scrambling to set up extra tables and chairs just as people arrived. Thankfully, the extra turnout significantly boosted our fundraising efforts for The Sparkle Foundation’s Medical Outreach Programme.

The Highlight of the Night

Throughout the evening, we made a conscious effort to show our guests exactly where the money raised would be going. One of the highlights was a live video link with The Sparkle Foundation's Project Coordinator, Vanessa Hamilton, in Malawi, giving everyone a direct connection to the communities their support would benefit.

The feedback from those who attended was overwhelmingly positive. Our 110 participants seemed to have a fantastic evening, with many commenting on the excellent raffle prizes generously donated by our sponsors, as well as the prizes awarded to the quiz winners.

A student speaks into a microphone while a large projector screen displays a live video call with The Sparkle Foundation's Project Coordinator, Vanessa Hamilton, and a colleague in Malawi. Audience members are seated at tables during a community fundraising quiz night, watching the presentation.

A Fundraising Success

Together, through ticket sales and raffle entries, we raised an incredible €2,269 for The Sparkle Foundation. These funds will purchase a handheld ultrasound machine and a haemoglobin machine for Sparkle Foundation’s Medical Outreach Programme, with any remaining funds supporting other essential medical equipment and supplies.

We want to thank everyone who supported us throughout this project. It has been an incredibly worthwhile learning experience as part of our Duke of Edinburgh volunteering journey, and we are proud that our efforts will help improve healthcare for families in Malawi.

The Sparkle Foundation has been named a finalist in the Community Building category of the 2026 .ORG Impact Awards, a global programme run by Public Interest Registry (PIR), the nonprofit steward of the .ORG domain. The awards celebrate mission driven organisations from across the world for the meaningful, measurable change they create in their communities, and we are proud to be recognised among this year's finalists. For The Sparkle Foundation, this nomination reflects more than a decade of work in Zomba, Malawi, where we have built an integrated model of education, healthcare, nutrition and livelihoods support designed to break the cycle of poverty at its roots.
What Britain's Aid Cut to Malawi Means for Charities on the Ground
By Talhia Le Berre August 4, 2026
UK government funding to Malawi is on track to drop by around 90 per cent within two years, from K117.9 billion down to K11.7 billion by 2028. The figures emerged in Parliament last week, where Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha faced questions from MP Francis Belekanyama on how such a steep reduction would affect budget delivery. The Minister's position was that the national budget itself is not at risk, since the reduction had already been built into government planning. Where he was less reassuring was on who absorbs the impact. Per the report, it is Malawi's NGOs, not the state, that are expected to feel this most, given how many rely on UK funding to run health, education and social protection work.
